Early review: Pokemon Heart Gold / Soul Silver

Tue Aug 11, 2009, 7:43 PM
Whether you love it or hate it, one thing remains true about Pokemon: That name alone can sell games. Most everyone you know has also had some experience with the games, too; the original games caused an uproar. Schools were banning the cards because of the problems they caused, churches were blaming Pokemon for encouraging Satanism, and people were bashing on it for merely being a cute, fuzzy mass-marketing frenzy. Love it or hate it, Pokemon made an impact.

Through all of this, Nintendo showed off the Game Boy Color - a short-lived system, in retrospect, but amazing at the time. I bought one just so I could play Pokemon Silver - Nintendo's first sequel in what would later become one of their top franchises. It changed a lot of features that made Red and Blue good, while adding a few touches that gave it more charm than its predecessor.

The story takes place in Johto, neighboring country to Kanto (Where the original games take place). Team Rocket, after taking a 3-year hiatus upon the defeat of their leader, Giovanni, decide to return and stir up trouble again.

Meanwhile, Professor Elm finds out something that really, you'd think they'd have seen by now - Pokemon hatch from eggs. Since he's too lazy to go confirm this himself, he gives the nearest 10-year old (that's you) a dangerous creature and sets you off on a journey almost two towns away.

Time passes by in real-time, meaning that when it becomes dark outside, the game will become darkened too. Different Pokemon show up at different times. The game had lived up to it's namesake. It was an instant classic.

It should be no surprise then that these remakes have a lot to live up to. Being built on the Platinum engine, this game will have updated movesets, characteristics, and natures that were introduced in the later games applied to the original game you already know and love. It also includes features introduced from other sources, too - Pokemon Yellow's influence shows in the form of your starter (Or any of the current 493 Pokemon), who follows you around on the world map, and is capable of giving you a small degree of personality.

Other included new features involve the Pokethlon, a new collection of touchscreen-based minigames. The even added events for Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza, just so every Pokemon is catchable this generation.

Look, I could prattle on for the next few hours about how much you should buy one of these games, but I think I'm done. For now.

Haven't beaten it yet, but I know how it ends. You can find an english translation patch if you look for it in Google. Trust me, it's badass.

Haha I beat it already. I was following the fan translation and got it right when it was finished. I was just wondering how you new about Lucas so well if you couldn't read Japanese.
